2024 polls: Be professional – Bawumia tells Police Service

Vice President and Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service to prioritize a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free general election in December.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 30, at a ceremony commissioning 430 newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) at the National Police Training School in Accra, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the essential role of the police in safeguarding democracy and sustaining public trust.

He commended the police for their dedication in managing past elections, which has contributed significantly to peace and stability in Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia, however, cautioned against complacency, urging the service to intensify its efforts amid current security challenges and heightened political tensions.

“Every election comes with its own challenges, but we are confident in the professionalism of the police. The police are central to elections in Ghana, and officers must act with responsibility,” he stated.

He further emphasized the importance of neutral, fair, and firm policing, which has previously fostered optimism. He cited the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise as a model of exemplary conduct, providing confidence for the upcoming election.

“You have achieved this before, and we are counting on you to maintain high professional standards in the discharge of your duties. The Ghana Police Service is setting the tone for a peaceful and incident-free election,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The Vice President also underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening police training, logistics, and equipment, highlighting these resources as vital to bolstering the service’s capacity to manage both electoral security and general law enforcement effectively.
