The late founder of the Ghana Freedom Party(GFP), Akua Donkor has become a household name and unique personality in Ghanaian politics.
Despite her lack of formal education, Akua Donkor was admired by many for her ability and determination to defy all odds.
However, one detail that many people may not know is her English name, “Veronica.”
Madam Donkor revealed this in an interview she granted to Kofi TV in 2016, which has resurfaced following her demise on Monday, October 28, 2024.
As an ardent promoter of the Twi language and a proud Ghanaian, Akua Donkor stated that she dropped “Veronica” to better identify with and resonate with her roots.
Born Veronica Asante Donkor, she explained that “Asante” was her father’s surname.
However, she chose to adopt “Akua,” the name for a female born on Wednesday, along with “Donkor,” which she inherited from her parents and was proud to carry.
“I’m Veronica, I was the one who wiped the face of Jesus. Likewise, He also wipes away all my tears and sorrow. People must be able to understand your name because there are people who don’t even know the meaning of the English names they have,” she said.
Akua Donkor until her demise at the Ridge Hospital was the presidential candidate of GFP for the December 7, 2024, presidential election.
As number three on the ballot paper, she explained it symbolises the trinity.
She first reported at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region with respiratory issues.
