The Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Isaac Boadi, has downplayed the effectiveness of the anti-galamsey strike by the  University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG).
According to him, the over two-week strike achieved nothing in the fight against galamsey in Ghana.
UTAG began the strike on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s perceived inaction on galamsey, which has severely impacted river bodies and forest reserves.
The strike has caused significant disruptions to academic activities nationwide was on Tuesday, October 29 called off.
However, speaking in an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, Prof Boadi was of the view that a demonstration would have been more efficient than the strike.
“A demonstration would have been more relevant than a strike because this did not in anyway shake the system, it was a disgrace. This is the first time I’m embarrassed in the UTAG leadership we did not even hear anyone speak during this strike,” he stated.
The convener of the ‘Silent Majority’ some UTAG members who opposed the strike action stressed it was a wrong approach.
“Silent Majority wanted the front of UTAG to be relevant. So next time if we want to engage the government, there must be a concerted effort,” he added.
