UTAG suspends anti-galamsey strike

-

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called off its strike in protest of the devastation caused by illegal mining locally known as ‘galamsey’.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, follows a vote on the industrial action by UTAG members.

This decision comes a few days after the National Executive Council (NEC) directed members across public universities to return to lecture halls by October 29.

UTAG began the strike on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s perceived inaction on galamsey, which has severely impacted river bodies and forest reserves.

The strike has caused significant disruptions to academic activities nationwide.

In a statement enforcing the call-off directive, UTAG said it was not an easy decision to make, but they considered the ripple effect.

The Association noted that its fight against galamsey remains on course to ensure Ghana’s environment is protected from harm.

Meanwhile, UTAG says it is prudent to explore other legal means to have their concerns about illegal mining addressed.
