National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his dedication to addressing the unique health and infrastructural needs of Ghana’s Zongo communities, with a focus on culturally sensitive health facilities and improved infrastructure.
At the closing ceremony of the Ghana National Muslims Conference in Accra on Sunday, October 27, Mahama outlined his plans to establish specialized facilities that will allow deceased Muslims to be managed according to Islamic burial customs.
This commitment, Mahama emphasized, aligns with his 2020 promise to prioritize the dignity and needs of Muslim communities in his national development agenda.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would work to provide facilities designed specifically for the Islamic handling of the deceased, ensuring that burial practices are consistent with Islamic religious standards.
Mahama also shared plans to enhance health services in Zongo communities, equipping local centers with modern medical resources and infrastructure.
He also noted that his government would partner with the private sector to construct new abattoirs and upgrade existing ones, meeting both World Health Organization (WHO) and halal standards.
By focusing on halal standards, these measures would benefit Zongo residents and Ghana’s larger Muslim community, bolstering both food safety and public health.
“We will fulfill our 2020 promise by creating specialized facilities for the handling of Muslim bodies to ensure respectful adherence to Islamic rites,” Mahama affirmed.
“We will also equip health centers in Muslim communities with essential infrastructure and partner with the private sector to build and upgrade abattoirs, meeting WHO standards and integrating halal practices in meat processing.”
