Eight killed after gunmen block Bolgatanga-Tamale highway

Gunmen have reportedly shot eight people dead after blocking the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale.

Accra-based Citi News reported the incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The gunmen are said to have mounted roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets.

Commuters caught up in the blockade faced interrogation, leading to the killing of eight.

Two vehicles were also set ablaze, raising security concerns in the area.

A survivor who was travelling from Sunyani to Page narrated the horrifying experience.

“Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond,” he said.

The attack is believed to be in connection with the Bawku Conflict.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public of their commitment to restoring peace and stability.
Currently,  there is also a joint Police and Military deployment along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.
