Election 2024: EC drops Yasarko printing press

-

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially canceled its contract with Yasarko Printing Press Limited, which was initially designated to print presidential and parliamentary ballot papers for the Oti and Western North regions in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

In a press release dated October 25, 2024, the EC announced that the printing responsibilities have now been transferred to Buck Press Limited and Acts Commercials Limited, who will handle the Oti and Western North regions, respectively.

This decision follows concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding transparency and fairness in the election preparations.

The NDC had expressed doubts about Yasarko Printing Press Limited’s capability and impartiality for such a critical electoral task.

The party previously called on the EC to assure them that measures were in place to prevent potential ballot tampering and to maintain strict oversight over the contracted printing firms.

The EC commenced the printing of notices of poll and ballot papers on October 11, 2024, amid increased scrutiny from political parties and civil society organizations.

The NDC emphasized the necessity for vigilance in the ballot production process, especially in regions with closely contested seats.

The press release, signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, reaffirmed the EC’s commitment to transparency and impartiality.

It assured stakeholders of the commission’s intent to provide equal oversight across all contracted firms to protect the integrity of the election.

The EC highlighted that Buck Press Limited and Acts Commercials Limited will adhere to the same rigorous standards to ensure the security and accuracy of the ballot papers.
