President Nana Akufo-Addo has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, on her recent election as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 26, President Akufo-Addo commended Botchwey’s dedication to inclusivity and progress, expressing confidence that these qualities will shape her tenure at the Commonwealth.
President Akufo-Addo thanked the Commonwealth leaders who supported Botchwey’s candidacy, acknowledging the key role their endorsement played in her election during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa.
He said her appointment not only brings honour to Ghana but also enhances the country’s international reputation.
Madam Botchwey was elected on Friday, October 25, after a rigorous selection process that included candidates from across the Commonwealth, making her one of the few African leaders to assume the esteemed position.
With over two decades of diplomatic experience, including her recent impactful role as Ghana’s Foreign Minister, she is poised to bring her progressive vision to the Commonwealth, focusing on unity, equitable development, and enhanced cooperation.
President Akufo-Addo expressed pride in her achievement, noting, “Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection reflects the strength of her character, her commitment to service, and the esteem in which Ghana is held on the global stage.”
He continued, “For years, I have watched her serve Ghana, Africa, and the international community with unwavering dedication and grace. Her role as Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister stands as a testament to her commitment to bridging divides and building meaningful partnerships.”
President Akufo-Addo’s message concluded with optimism for the Commonwealth’s future under Botchwey’s leadership, stating, “Her vision of inclusivity and progress will undoubtedly inspire the Commonwealth family and guide it towards a future of hope and unity.”
