The University of Ghana has strongly refuted recent claims made by Rev. Lawrence Tetteh regarding alleged HIV infections among its student population.
The school described the allegations as baseless and lacking credible evidence.
Rev. Tetteh made the statements during an appearance on GTV’s Breakfast Show on October 24, 2024, where he suggested a high prevalence of HIV among students at the University.
In response, the University has expressed grave concern over the remarks, labelling them as insensitive and disappointing.
In an official statement, the University emphasized the importance of handling discussions about HIV/AIDS with factual accuracy and ethical considerations.
Also, it pointed out that diagnosing HIV can only be done through scientific testing, and not through speculation, counselling, or prayer.
Additionally, the institution warned that making claims without data-backed evidence could perpetuate stigma and misinformation, leading to public fear.
Nonetheless, the University has called on Rev. Tetteh and GTV to issue an apology and retract the statements made during the show, while urging both the media and the public to approach sensitive health issues with caution and rely on verified information.
