Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has said that the ongoing disagreements between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament should not hinder government business.
In his view, the core issue lies in the personal ambitions of the leader of the NPP members in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, rather than the national interest.
“It is not always about the numbers when it comes to passing government business. The issue of who is majority or minority does not stop anything. Afenyo-Markin’s personal ego is what is driving all this. He just wants to be called the Majority Leader,” Mr. Ayariga stated, adding that this was not in the interest of Ghanaians.
He made this known in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday following the indefinite adjournment of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22.
The session ended in a heated debate over which party holds the majority in the House.
Despite the tensions, Mr. Ayariga assured that NDC MPs remain committed to fulfilling their legislative responsibilities.
“We have no objections to any important matter Afenyo-Markin brings, and we are willing to work together, but he didn’t take that approach,” he explained.
The NDC MP clarified that there was no real issue that required a decision on the day of the adjournment, and the disagreement stemmed solely from Afenyo-Markin’s insistence on claiming the title of Majority Leader.
Mr. Ayariga further stressed the NDC’s readiness to return to the Chamber when called by the Speaker.
“Our willingness to return reflects our dedication to ensuring the continuity of Ghana’s governance process,” he said, disclosing their commitment to serving the nation despite the political standoff.
The adjournment occurred after a sharp disagreement between the NDC and NPP over which party occupies the majority side of Parliament.
