UCL MD3 preview: Real Madrid clash with Borussia Dortmund as Barca host Bayern

-

A repeat of last season’s UEFA Champions League final, pitting Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund, is the headline fixture as Matchday 3 is played across Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 October.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Real and Dortmund will meet on Tuesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, with ‘Los Blancos’ looking bounce back from a surprise defeat away to Lille earlier this month, while BVB were flying high with a 7-1 destruction of Celtic.

“We experienced a result we’re not accustomed to,” said Real manager Carlo Ancelotti. “The opposition deserved their win. They were better in the duels. They were better, we have to accept that. We have to learn from our errors. It was the same the last time we lost a match. You have to learn from those defeats.”

Tuesday also features Premier League sides Arsenal and Aston Villa playing host to Shakhtar Donetsk and Bologna respectively, while Paris Saint-Germain and PSV Eindhoven will have a meeting of Ligue 1 and Eredivisie champions at the Parc des Princes.

PSG manager Luis Enrique is demanding a great effort from his team after a 2-0 loss away to Arsenal last time out: “We were far away from the standards you need in this kind of match, especially in our duels,” said the Spaniard.

“We lost almost every single duel. If you want to get something positive, you need to improve those phases of the game.”

The top match on Wednesday is the meeting of Barcelona and Bayern Munich at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, which sees the former’s manager, Hansi Flick, come up against the team he led to glory in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League.

“We need to keep learning, keep developing,” said Flick. “We’ve got a series of very interesting rivals coming up. I’m hungry for that, as are the players and fans, meaning that we need to be at our best level.”

Also keep an eye out for Liverpool’s trip to RB Leipzig, Manchester City hosting Sparta Prague, and Inter Milan heading to Switzerland for a clash with Young Boys – with the Nerazzurri looking to build on two promising performances: a draw away to Man City, and a 4-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade.

“We wanted this victory to follow up the performance in Manchester. We must continue in this direction,” said manager Simone Inzaghi.
