Ghana Institution of Engineering calls for increased awareness to reduce road crashes

The Ghana Institution of Engineering has stressed the importance of educating motorists on road traffic regulations as a key measure to reduce accidents.

The institution believes that proper enforcement of these regulations depends on ensuring that drivers are fully aware of their responsibilities when behind the wheel.

This call follows a recent spate of road accidents in areas such as East Legon, the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and the Kumasi-Obuasi stretch.

In an interview with Citi News, the President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, urged the Police to take proactive steps to enhance road safety.

“We would encourage the police, beyond issuing penalties for minor offences, to remind drivers of their duties. It’s important to bring their focus back to safe driving, particularly for commercial drivers,” he said.

Ing. Bempong also cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant, especially with the upcoming general election and Christmas season.

“Drivers must exercise caution and practice defensive driving—anticipating that anything can happen—to help reduce accidents during the festive period. We often see heightened excitement during holidays and election times, which can lead to reckless driving,” he advised.
