A Political Analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Thomas Buabeng has said the Eighth Parliament has been one of the best the country has experienced in its democratic process.
According to him, the close numbers that led to a hung parliament have helped run the House’s businesses.
Dr Buabeng was speaking on Adom FM’s political show, Burning Issues with Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom.
“Because of how the numbers are close, absenteeism has been low because all the parties want their members to be present so they do not lose on anything.
“This he said has led to a situation where the public has witnessed how Members of Parliament who are sick has been brought to the Chamber to come and vote so they make the number,” he said.
He continued, “I hear people say Ghana nearly had a Hung Parliament due how the numbers are too close but from where I sit, I can say this current Parliament is Hung but it is helping Ghanaians a lot.”
The New Patriotic Party(NPP) MPs who form the Majority have 138 MPs as against 137 of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs who are on the Minority side.
Due to how keen the numbers are, there have been several tussles in the Chamber between both side during debates as each side tries all the time to push their way through.
This has resulted in a lot of criticism from the public who have labelled the 8th Parliament as most difficult one because of the confusion that has characterized their activities.
Meanwhile, the Political Lecturer added that the way governance is run in Ghana, Parliament does not have absolute independence and there could be an interference at some point.
