Kwahuhene destooled over alleged extortion

Kingmakers of Kwawu Abene in the Kwawu East District of the Eastern region have in a unanimous decision destooled the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II.

The kingmakers on Saturday, October 19, 2024, performed rites at the Kwahu Palace in Abene to cement the destoolment.

The decision follows Daasebre Agyapong II’s resignation as the Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) over allegations of GH₵2M extortion.

Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV who spoke on behalf of the kingmakers declared Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II’s position as Kwawuhene vacant and invalid.

“Nananom, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II is no longer the King of Kwawu. We assure you that we will find another formidable replacement for the benefit of all indigenous people in Kwawu,” he said.

An ADB customer, Collins Darkwa petitioned the Office of the President, alleging that the Kwahumanhene extorted a significant amount of money from him in exchange for a GH₵12 million loan.

The businessman claimed that the chief demanded GH₵50,000.00 up front and further loan from him for the approval of the 12 million Ghana cedis.

He therefore appealed to the Presidency to help him recover a total amount of GH₵2,408,000.00 from the immediate past Board Chairman.

“Under pressure from my suppliers to procure logistics for the cashew to be supplied, I had no other choice than to agree to the conditions”, Mr. Darkwa said.

The Bank of Ghana(BoG) later directed the chief to resign as ADB Board Chair, pending investigations into the allegation.
