East Legon accident: Arrest and prosecute attackers of journalist – GJA to Police

-

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on Murtala Inusah, a court correspondent for EIB Network, by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The attack reportedly happened on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Accra High Court.

Bishop Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, were in court following a tragic car accident involving their 16-year-old son, Elrad Amoako, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals at East Legon.

While covering the case, Murtala Inusah, who was wearing his Judicial Press Corps ID badge, was attacked by sympathizers unhappy with his filming of the proceedings.

As a result of the attack, Mr. Inusah lost both his phone and his ‘good health’.

In a statement released on Thursday, the GJA described the assault as “devilish” and urged the police to swiftly arrest and prosecute the attackers.

“The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemns in the strongest terms the brutal assault on EIB Network court correspondent Murtala Inusah by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. This senseless attack left Mr. Inusah, a Legal Affairs Correspondent, with injuries to his fingers and severe bodily pain. We have also been informed that a court warrant officer who tried to assist him was likewise assaulted, an act we equally condemn without reservation.”

The GJA further called on the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they face justice.

They also appealed to the Judiciary to impose stringent punishments if the assailants are found guilty.

According to the GJA, Murtala Inusah has already lodged a formal complaint at the Ministries Police Station, and the necessary documents have been submitted.

They urged the Police to expedite their investigation.

The GJA reiterated its stance that such acts of violence against journalists and law enforcement officers performing their duties must be met with the full force of the law.
