The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has taken on the Electoral Commission (EC) over the disqualification of Bernard Mornah, the presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), from the 2024 election.
Mr Mahama has accused the EC of deliberately sidelining the PNC candidate.
According to him, Mr Mornah is qualified more than some of the candidates cleared and deserves to be on the ballot.
“The PNC is a more worthy party than several parties that I see on the ballot paper, but that is the issue with the EC, sometimes they are discriminatory because there are some people on this ballot paper who Bernard Mornah qualifies more to be here than them,” he said.
The former President was speaking at a rally in Wa of the Upper West Region.
“Thirteen candidates were approved, but our brothers in the PNC were unfairly excluded. I don’t see any justification for this,” he stated.
This comes a few days after the PNC National Chairman, Samson Asaki Awingobit accused the NDC of neglecting, criticising the party for not reaching out to condole with Mr Mornah following his disqualification.
Mr Mornah and 10 other candidates were disqualified from contesting the presidential race after filing and thorough vetting of the nomination forms of 24 people.
The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, had explained that Mr Mornah’s exclusion was due to irregularities in his nomination forms, citing inconsistencies in the signatures of his supporters.
In some cases, the same signature appeared for multiple supporters.
However, Mr Mornah who believes he was treated unfairly is currently challenging his disqualification in court.
