Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Emmanuel O. Akwetey, has raised concerns about Ghana’s preparedness to prevent violence and build public confidence ahead of the December elections.
Speaking at the IDEG Ghana Speaks High-Level Forum in Accra on Thursday, October 10, under the theme “Advancing Peace, Unity, and National Cohesion in Ghana,” Dr. Akwetey pointed out that critical measures to ensure a peaceful electoral process have not been adequately addressed.
He noted that, the Electoral Commission (EC) frequently faces scrutiny, particularly regarding the selection of its officials, which he believes undermines public trust and heightens tensions during election periods.
Dr. Akwetey stressed the need for greater efforts to enhance transparency and trust in the electoral process, warning that peaceful and credible elections are vital for preserving national unity and cohesion.
“We have not done enough to deter violence or boost confidence in a peaceful, credible, and fair election. Much of the blame has been placed on the EC, with the expectation that they alone can prevent issues that erode confidence in the voters’ register,” he remarked.
“The necessary reforms and institutions to manage more complex elections have not been implemented, and the appointment process of EC chairpersons by ruling political parties, be it the NDC or NPP, has fostered suspicion about their credibility and professionalism,” he added.
