Draw inspiration from Pope Francis ahead of the elections – Cardinal Turkson to Bawumia, Mahama

Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences at the Vatican, His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, has urged President Akufo-Addo and the two leading 2024 Presidential candidates to draw inspiration from their interactions with Pope Francis.

Speaking at the IDEG High-Level Forum 2024 on Thursday, October 10, Cardinal Turkson emphasised the significance of these leaders reflecting on their encounters with the Pope, especially as Ghana approaches the December 7 elections.

He advised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to allow the lessons from Pope Francis to shape their conduct and leadership.

Cardinal Turkson praised Pope Francis’s virtues, highlighting his commitment to peace, respect for human dignity, and prioritization of the well-being of individuals over conflict and hatred.

He encouraged Ghana’s political leaders to emulate the Pope’s example by leading with compassion, empathy, and understanding.

“The three protagonists, the three leaders—Akufo-Addo, Bawumia, and Mahama—have all visited Pope Francis. I invite them to take away some of the values and virtues they experienced during those visits. These include peace, respect for human dignity, and promoting harmony over conflict and hatred,” Cardinal Turkson said.

He called on President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Bawumia, and former President Mahama to let these experiences guide their leadership and shape the future of Ghana as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
