Galamsey: Why Organised Labour suspended strike – Spio-Garbrah reveals [Listen]

-

Former Minister of Trade, Dr. Spio-Garbrah has said money played a role in the decision by Organised Labour to suspend their planned strike over illegal mining known in local parlance as galamsey.

According to him, sometimes in labour negotiations, money plays a crucial role.

Oganised Labour had declared strike in protest against government’s inability to stop illegal mining which has led to environmental degradation.

The strike was supposed to have kicked off on Thursday, October 10, 2024, but it was suspended on October 9, 2024.

General Secretary of Trade Union Congress, Joshua Ansah at press conference said they are convinced government will take action to stop the menace.

But Dr. Spio-Garbrah in an interview with host of Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom was not convinced.

Having led a number of international negotiations, he is certain their decision to call off the strike may have been financially induced.

“There are several ways to call off a strike. If the strike is suspended without any timeline to strike again, then something might have happened” Dr. Spio-Garbrah added.
