Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for justice to be served on the #StopGalamsey demonstrators who allegedly committed some breaches during their recent protest.
However, he emphasized the need to find a lasting solution to the menace of illegal mining, which has been a major concern for the government and citizens alike.
Former President Kufuor’s call for justice comes after a recent incident in which a group of demonstrators allegedly blocked major roads among other offences.
The Police arrested 53 protestors and detained them for two weeks, with 52 granted bail.
Speaking to Accra-based Angel FM, former President Kufuor said while the demonstrators had the right to protest, their actions were unacceptable and must be addressed by the law.
“If you attack a police officer or take away their car key, you must face the law or be punished. We can’t let them go scot-free,” he said.
President Kufuor also acknowledged that the issue of illegal mining is a complex one that requires a multifaceted approach.
“We must find a solution to this menace that affects not only the environment but also the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. We need to work together to find a way to stop the destruction of our natural resources and ensure that our environment is protected for future generations” he said.
The former President’s comments come as the government has been under pressure from citizens and labour unions to address the issue of galamsey, which has been linked to widespread environmental degradation, water pollution, and health problems.
The #StopGalamsey protestors, who have been gaining momentum in recent months, have been calling for the government to take stronger action to stop illegal mining activities.
