President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has called on the Black Stars to elevate their game, emphasizing that the team has a rich history that predates their players’ existence.
The four-time African champions have encountered a rocky start in their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, losing 1-0 to Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and settling for a 1-1 draw against Niger in Morocco.
These outcomes have placed them third in their group with just one point.
As they prepare for a crucial doubleheader against Sudan in their Matchday three and four fixtures, Okraku addressed the team on Tuesday, urging them to step up following their lacklustre performances in the opening matches.
“In 1957, Ghana gained independence, led by men with courage; men who did not flee from the battlefield. That’s why we achieved independence,” he said.
“When [Mohammed] Kudus, you weren’t born, this team—Black Stars—already existed. Alexander [Djiku], before you were born, this team called Black Stars was here. So, before any of you were born, Black Stars existed.
“The question now is, in your time, what will be the difference? The difference lies in what you do with the opportunities given to you,” he added.
The Black Stars are set to face Sudan in the first leg of their doubleheader on Thursday, October 10, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.
They will then head to Libya for the return match on Monday, October 14, at the Martyrs of February Stadium.
