DRIP was funded by Common Fund, not loans – Fatimatu Abubakar tells Mahama

-

Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar has responded to claims made by John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the funding of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

Mahama had alleged that the government made only a 15% down payment from a loan secured for the DRIP initiative.

However, speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale on Tuesday, October 8, Fati Abubakar clarified that the government did not rely on a loan for the programme but instead utilized the District Assembly Common Fund.

“This initiative is part of President Akufo-Addo’s legacy and is fully funded by his government. For anyone to suggest that we secured a loan and have only been able to pay 15 percent is misleading. The District Assembly Common Fund, a statutory fund free from political bias, was leveraged to finance the DRIP initiative,” she stated.

Launched on July 31, 2024, by President Akufo-Addo, DRIP aims to address the urgent need for road maintenance and construction equipment in metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, promoting better connectivity and economic growth across the country.
