The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of TUC-Ghana has instructed its members to commence a nationwide strike on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
This action is in response to the government’s failure to meet organised labour’s demands regarding the fight against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 8, GAWU affirmed that its decision to strike followed a meeting between organised labour and President Akufo-Addo on October 3.
According to the Union, the meeting yielded no significant progress, as the President was unable to convince them to call off the planned strike.
GAWU’s participation forms part of a broader initiative led by organised labour, which is urging the government to declare a state of emergency to effectively address the galamsey crisis.
The Union, alongside other labour groups, seeks to ramp up pressure on the government to tackle the environmental and social consequences of illegal mining.
“We therefore call on management to support this cause, as all workers are directed to stay off work starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, until the government meets our demands.”
