2025 AFCONQ: CK Akonnor disappointed with Black Stars start

-

Former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor has expressed disappointment with the team’s performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

After securing consecutive victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, Ghana was eager to maintain that momentum.

However, the team faced a setback, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Angola in their AFCON opener at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger. These results leave Ghana in third place with just one point.

Reflecting on the team’s first two matches, Akonnor remarked, “It’s not good to play two matches and get one point, but I know and hope they will bounce back,” as he shared his thoughts with Graphic Sports.

The Black Stars will continue their qualifying campaign with two matches against Sudan during Matchdays three and four.

The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, at Accra Sports Stadium, while the return match will take place on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

The team began training on Monday with 11 players at the Accra Sports Stadium, and the remaining squad members are expected to join for their second training session later today.
