The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has thrown its full support behind the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in its call for a nationwide strike to press the government to declare a State of Emergency in response to the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis.
The PPP is urging the government to immediately ban all forms of illegal mining, especially those affecting water bodies, forest reserves, and other areas in the country.
In a statement on October 6, the PPP described galamsey as the “most existential threat” to Ghana, accusing illegal miners of engaging in “biological warfare” against the nation by using hazardous chemicals like mercury.
The party pledged to sign the TUC’s Anti-Galamsey Declaration unconditionally and praised the TUC for standing up against what they termed as “state-capture and state-sponsored terrorism.”
The PPP also criticized President Akufo-Addo for failing to address the galamsey menace during his tenure and called for decisive leadership.
They highlighted its 10-Point Agenda, which includes free compulsory education and job creation, as a solution to provide alternatives for unemployed youth involved in galamsey.
The PPP reiterated its readiness to govern with integrity and discipline to bring peace and prosperity to Ghana.
