Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with all relevant stakeholders in addressing Ghana’s illegal mining crisis, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 4, following a closed-door meeting between President Akufo-Addo and leaders of Organised Labour, the Minister highlighted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s dedication to safeguarding the environment while promoting sustainable mining practices.
The meeting, held in response to Organised Labour’s announcement of an indefinite strike beginning on October 10, was triggered by the government’s failure to meet their demands for a total ban on all forms of mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to tackle galamsey. The strike was declared on Tuesday, October 1.
During the discussions, President Akufo-Addo urged Organised Labour to reconsider the strike, assuring them of his commitment to addressing their concerns.
He also requested more time to address the demands raised by the labour leaders.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable mining and protect the environment, assuring the public that engagement with stakeholders will continue to achieve these goals.
