#FreeTheCitizens demo: Chaotic scenes unfold at Kawukudi [Video]

-

Chaos marred the second day of the #StopGalamseyNow and #FreeTheCitizens demonstration following rioting at the Kawukudi Intersection on the Nima-37 Highway.

A group of motorbike riders who were not part of the demonstration fiercely clashed with Police in an attempt to access portions of the road which had been blocked.

Speaking on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Ernesto Yeboah, the Commander-in-Chief for the Economic Fighters League who is part of the protest said the Police was partly responsible for the confusion.

Mr Yeboah said the Police fell short in discharging their duties and controlling the young men who appeared angry.

According to him, the expectation was that the Police would engage the motor riders to exercise restraints so they can pass after the protesters had crossed the intersection.

But Mr Yeboah claimed the police watched on while some of the motor riders attempted to breach barricades mounted.

However, he said the protesters swiftly intervened and brought the situation under control and calm restored.

The protesters are demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested during an anti-galamsey demonstration last week.

The three-day demonstration, which started on Wednesday, October 2, will run until October 5, to highlight the ongoing environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
