NLC to meet Organised Labour over intended strike

The National Labour Commission (NLC) barring any unforeseen circumstances will today, October 3, 2024, meet Organised Labour over its intended strike.

The strike, set to commence on October 10, is in response to the government’s failure to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Last month, the TUC presented three key demands to the government, including the immediate removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves and areas surrounding water bodies.

They also called for the deployment of the Police and Military with full authority to remove or destroy mining and earth-moving equipment near river bodies and within forest reserves.

The Executive Secretary of NLC, Ofosu Asamoah, who announced the meeting said it aims to address concerns raised in a notice from the union.

“We just got a note of it and the commission will be sitting on [Wednesday] and we will look at the way forward. Fortunately, the strike is intended to begin on the 10th so we have time to look at it,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.
