Why I vowed never to become like my mother – Adaku of Jenifa’s Diary

-

Nigerian actress and media personality, Lolo1, popularly known for her role as Adaku in the popular TV series Jenifa’s Diary, has opened up about her frustration with modern relationships and why she personally vowed never to be like her mother.

Speaking candidly on the topic, Lolo1 reflected on how societal expectations have changed and how today’s women are refusing to accept the sacrifices their mothers made for the sake of maintaining traditional households.

Lolo1 noted how many women in the past accepted a life of timidity and over-submissiveness, often sidelining their personal dreams in favor of their families.

However, she pointed out that this mindset is no longer prevalent.

“A lot of our mothers were okay with a little bit of shrouding, a little bit of quietness, a little bit of over-submissiveness. Many of them actually mortgaged their dreams to keep their homes. But the women of now don’t do that, cannot do that.”

She remarked that today’s women are more empowered and have a desire to achieve their own goals, making them vastly different from previous generations.

Lolo1 revealed that her own decision to never become like her mother came from witnessing the uhealthy sacrifices she made throughout her life.

“I, as a person, when I saw the way my mom was, I VOWED that I would never be like her. Because there were so many things she took that she had no business taking. She had dreams, she never realized one. Her children were her pride, but beyond that, there was little else she held onto.”

However, as a modern woman, the actress refuses to suppress her ambitions for the sake of tradition.

Unlike her mother, she believes in equality and the idea that she can achieve just as much as men, without being held back by societal norms.

She challenged men to step up and adjust to the times, urging them to stop hiding behind outdated notions of patriarchy.
