2024 polls: Mahama pledges National zero-tolerance policy on Gender-Based Violence

-

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama,  has made a strong pledge to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in Ghana.

He vowed to introduce a national zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and domestic violence, addressing the troubling statistic that 27.7% of women in Ghana face various forms of GBV. Mr. Mahama emphasized the pressing need to protect women from abuse and ensure their safety.

Speaking at the NDC Women’s Manifesto launch on Monday, September 30, the former President said “We will implement a national zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and domestic violence. We reject the notion that women should suffer in silence.”

As part of his initiative, Mr. Mahama outlined plans to establish regional shelters, offering immediate protection and support for survivors of violence.

He also committed to ensuring survivors receive comprehensive care, including medical, psychological, and legal services, to aid in their recovery and rebuilding process.
