President Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaian journalists to avoid spreading misinformation that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards and the 75th-anniversary celebration in Accra on September 28, the President stressed the need for media professionals to report with integrity, ensure fairness in their coverage, and provide voters with accurate information ahead of the 2024 general elections.
President Akufo-Addo urged journalists to serve as gatekeepers of truth by prioritizing facts over falsehoods.
He acknowledged the significant role the media has played in previous elections but warned of the growing threat of fake news and sensationalism in the digital era, which could negatively impact the electoral process.
“Every four years, Ghanaians head to the polls to choose their leaders, and the media is indispensable in this process. Through your efforts, citizens are informed about party policies, the character of candidates, and the critical issues that affect their lives.
“The media’s role during elections cannot be overstated. You’ve been at the forefront, monitoring polls, reporting on irregularities, and ensuring the voices of the electorate are heard. The peaceful transitions of power that Ghana has experienced are, in no small part, due to the diligence and integrity of the media.
“However, times are changing, and in this digital age, we are confronted with new challenges—disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and sensationalism—that can distort the electoral process. While technology has democratized information, it has also introduced new vulnerabilities.
“In the era of social media, where information spreads faster than ever, journalists must step up as gatekeepers of the truth, ensuring that facts prevail over falsehoods. As we approach another election cycle, I urge the media to maintain its critical role, reporting with integrity, ensuring fairness, and delivering accurate, timely, and comprehensive information to help voters make informed choices.”
The President noted that, the stakes are particularly high for the media to ensure balanced and truthful reporting.
“The stakes are high, and your role has never been more vital. I stand before you not only as the President but as someone who has journeyed alongside the media in our quest for freedom and democracy.”
President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to a free and vibrant press, underscoring its essential role in Ghana’s democracy as the nation prepares for the 2024 elections.
“I am deeply committed to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent. Your work is crucial to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation.”
