Declaring a state of emergency won’t solve ‘galamsey’ problem – Salam Mustapha

-

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has asserted that calls for the declaration of a state of emergency won’t combat illegal mining locally known as ‘galamsey’.

Acknowledging the devastation caused by galamsey to water bodies and the environment, Mr Mustapha believes such a move would not effectively address the issue.

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Labour Unions over the past weeks have called for immediate action from the government to halt galamsey as well as the declaration of a state of emergency as a temporary measure.

However, Mr Mustapha in an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Friday called for a more strategic and sustainable approach that will ensure long-term resolution while addressing the root causes.

“I have been to a galamsey site before and it is an intricate matter. It is not just about declaring a state of emergency. That won’t solve the problem. It is a whole cabal and we need to deal with the root cause. If not, he will shake the leaves to fall while the root still exists,” he said.

The NPP Youth Organiser emphasised the importance of engaging all stakeholders, including local communities, traditional leaders, and relevant authorities, to find lasting solutions.

He further urged the government to focus on strengthening existing regulations and intensifying enforcement efforts to deter illegal miners, while also promoting alternative livelihoods for those involved in galamsey activities.
