The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has expressed worry over the government’s flood prevention and management efforts.
The former President’s concern comes in the wake of recent heavy downpours in Accra and other parts of the country.
Mr Mahama bemoaned that many areas still experience significant flooding with even the slightest rainfall despite huge investments made.
He said the periodic desilting of drains which his government embark on ahead of the rainy season were not adopted by the Akufo-Addo led government and has increased the flooding rate in the country, particularly Accra.
Addressing Ablekuma North constituents as part of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mr Mahama assured that flooding and destruction of properties will be a thing of the past under the next NDC government.
“When NDC was in power, we were desilting all choked gutters ahead of the rainy season to allow free flow of water. Some areas were not experiencing flooding but now that we receive funding to curb flooding, the situation is devastating.
“We have had a sanitation Ministry over the past 8 years who are given huge budgets and receive funding from World Bank but the situation persists. So the next NDC government will scrap the ministry with the powers vested back into the Local Government Ministry,” he said.
The NDC has been telling constituents of Ablekuma North, to reconsider their position of voting NPP in elections and give them a try.
John Mahama says, he is aware of the flooding challenges they face; and, a future NDC will reintroduce some of the measures he instituted before tumbling out of office.
