It is true NMC may be a toothless bulldog but… – Chairman [Audio]

The Chairman of the National Media Commission(NMC) Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, has admitted the outfit may be a toothless bulldog as perceived by some Ghanaians.

However, Mr Ayeboafo has said the NMC was not established to function as a dog.

He made these remarks on Adom Brands’ national dialogue on media freedom in Kumasi on Friday.

“Sometimes people including journalists describe Media Commission as a toothless bulldog and that it true but NMC was not set up to operate like a dog.

“But sometimes a dog that only barks is better because it draws you attention to issues but the dog who just bites will do so without any warning and we [NMC) seeks to comply with what the law says,” he noted.

Mr Ayeboafo stated that the NMC is committed to its mandate to sensitise the media landscape and maintain high journalistic standards.

But this according to him is not to bring the media in Ghana under siege, as journalists on their own are expected to be ethical.

“The countries in the world where democracy is thriving, journalists have contributed to that and it is not because security personnel are there to keep watch and enforce that,” he said.
