#DefendMediaFreedom: NDC advocates for insurance cover for journalists [Audio]

-

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on media houses to provide insurance covers for journalists.

The Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr Frank Amoakohene made the call during the Adom Brands of the Multimedia Media Group’s (MGL) national dialogue on defending media freedom on Friday.

Dr Amoakohene said  the insurance cover will help alleviate financial burden on media practitioners when attacked or maimed in their line of duty.

Pledging the NDC’s commitment to media freedom, he stated that the poor welfare and violence against media practitioners can threaten Ghana’s democracy.

“The insurance cover must be paid of working conditions and the GJA and other labour bodies must endeavour to push for that,” he advised.

Dr. Amoakohene however cautioned journalists against political polarisation, stating it affects the discourse on national issues as the fourth estate of the realm.

The dialogue which brought together political actors and other relevant stakeholders was to discuss strategies that would ensure free press in Ghana following the decline on the World Press Freedom Index over the past three years.
