Businessman and leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, has expressed strong concerns following the arrest of several individuals involved in the Democracy Hub protest and the call to end illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” in Ghana.
In a recent post on X, Cheddar voiced frustration over the arrests and criticized the government, stating that it is increasingly becoming an “anarchy.”
Addressing those who criticized him for not participating in the protest, which he described as politically motivated, Cheddar clarified that he has no issue with peaceful demonstrations.
“I don’t have a problem with anyone having a demo; it happens in any country. But I don’t stand behind a sponsored violence demo,” he wrote.
He recalled his past involvement in peaceful protests and highlighted his support for demonstrators by providing food and water. However, he distanced himself from any protests he believes are politically charged and violent.
Meanwhile, Cheddar condemned the arrests that took place during the Democracy Hub protest, pointing out that many innocent people have been detained without release, even after 48 hours.
He also expressed disappointment with the judiciary and legislative systems, accusing them of failing to uphold the democratic values outlined in the constitution.
“The law for our judiciary system and legislation that we are supposed to practice with our democratic constitution is not working,” he remarked.
He also questioned the silence of various groups, including the Peace Council, Christian organizations, and other leaders, over the ongoing illegal mining activities that have devastated the country’s water bodies.
“It’s the same politicians convincing people to do what is not right. Who is supposed to stop and restrict?”
Cheddar further urged the youth to take action and exercise their voting rights to demand change. “It’s a generational thing, and we have woken up… let’s vote them out. Your thumb can speak much better for you… let’s use our thumb to demonstrate.”
