NAPO hails NPP’s achievements in the cocoa sector as ‘unprecedented’

The Vice Presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has commended the government’s achievements in the cocoa sector, describing them as unparalleled in Ghana’s history.

During a community engagement in Numereso in the Odotobiri constituency, as part of his campaign tour on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Dr Prempeh underscored the significant strides made in cocoa production, farmer incentives, and overall welfare improvements for cocoa farmers.

He noted that, under the current administration, Ghana reached its highest cocoa production level, surpassing one million metric tonnes during the 2020/2021 crop season.

This milestone, he said, was the result of the government’s focused investment and prioritization of the cocoa industry.

Dr. Prempeh further highlighted the significant incentives provided to cocoa farmers, asserting that their well-being is now at its highest point in the nation’s history due to the NPP’s strategic policies designed to uplift their livelihoods.

As the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, he reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to further investments in the cocoa sector, assuring the community that these initiatives would continue to benefit the nation’s farmers.

He recalled that in 2016, when the NPP took office, the price of a sack of cocoa was GHȼ475. Today, after the latest adjustment, the price has surged to GHȼ3,000, representing a dramatic increase of over 315%.

“This is the second price increase in 2024, following an earlier 58.26% rise in April,” he said. “We will continue supporting initiatives like the fertilizer application programme, cocoa mass spraying, and pollination efforts to further boost cocoa production.”
