Democracy Hub worried over treatment of detained protesters

-

The organisers of the three-day #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamseyNow demonstration, Democracy Hub, have raised concerns about participants who were arrested during the march.

Currently, over 40 protesters are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service, pending a possible court hearing.

However, Democracy Hub has said they have received alarming information regarding the status of protesters.

In a statement, the group claimed the protesters who were forcibly taken into custody have been moved from various stations to the Police Headquarters in Osu.

The statement noted that, the detainees have been separated into groups are still being held without any official communication, regarding the reasons for their arrest.

“Most alarmingly, these citizens are being denied access to their legal representatives, a clear violation of their fundamental rights,” part of the statement read.

The group therefore called on the media to swiftly report the situation they have described as “inhumane treatment.”.

“Given the track record of police impunity and the apparent complicity of the state’s justice system, we cannot trust that the rights and safety of these individuals will be respected without public scrutiny,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the pressure group has emphasised its commitment to transparency, justice and the protection of civil liberties.

“We stand firm in our demand for the immediate release of all detained protesters and for full accountability for these actions” it said.
