The Minority members of Parliament’s Education Committee have revealed that the government owes over £17 million in unpaid tuition fees for 927 Ghanaian students studying in the United Kingdom under scholarship.
This debt has accumulated over 27 months.
According to the caucus, the government’s failure to fulfill its financial obligations has led some universities to withdraw their support and cancel their Memorandums of Understanding with the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Deputy Ranking Member of the Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, called on government to take immediate action to prevent further embarrassment to the nation.
“The students report that the government owes over £17 million in unpaid fees, leading to several being withdrawn from their schools. Some are barred from attending in-person classes, while others face deportation, arrest, or prosecution,” Dr. Apaak stated.
He claimed the dire situation has driven some students to engage in desperate measures for survival.
“There are reports of male students selling their sperm, while some female students have turned to prostitution” Dr. Apaak bemoaned.
