The People’s Forum: Onion traders in Adjen Kotoku urge gov’t to fix deteriorating road

-

Onion sellers in Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region, are calling on the government to address the poor road conditions leading to the new onion market.

This issue has been significantly impacting their businesses since they were relocated from Agbogbloshie three years ago.

The move, intended to improve their situation, has instead presented several challenges, including deteriorating roads, a decline in customer numbers, and inadequate infrastructure.

Speaking on People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, the traders expressed their frustrations about the state of the roads.

They also mentioned issues with Police harassment, noting that their trucks are frequently stopped for bribes.

“The main challenge we face is with transportation, which costs us a lot of money. Before we can bring a truck of onions here, we spend a lot of money because the police keep stopping our trucks for bribes. We want to speak to the heads of the police service about this issue,” one trader stated.

Another trader highlighted the difference in conditions between Agbogbloshie and Adjen Kotoku, emphasizing how the poor roads and dispersed customer base have made business more difficult.

“Working in Agbogbloshie was far better than this place. Unfortunately, the roads leading to this place are bad, and the customers have dispersed to other markets as well,” the trader said.

Additionally, the traders pointed out how the depreciation of the cedi and increased costs of importing onions from Niger have made their situation more challenging.

They stressed that, although onions are an essential commodity and a potentially good business, the external factors, including transportation issues and rising costs, are significantly affecting their livelihoods.

The traders are urging the government to take immediate action to fix the road and provide better infrastructure to support their businesses.
