Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed his frustration over the recent ban imposed on the Baba Yara stadium.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked the stadium’s license last week, citing the poor condition of its playing surface.
This ban means the Black Stars are now unable to host any of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches at the venue.
In an interview with Graphic Sports Stadium, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, who also serves on the board of Hearts of Oak, expressed disbelief about the development.
He indicated that, with Ghana’s rich footballing history and economic strength, it is left without a single CAF-approved stadium for international matches.
“We deserve it,” he said. “People have been complaining about the Accra Sports Stadium for a while now. The facilities are in terrible shape—no one can even use the toilets. Even the lights in the VVIP section are faulty.”
He suggested that the management of state-owned stadiums be transferred to private companies, who would be responsible for proper upkeep, ensuring everything from clean toilets to adequate water supply, in line with CAF regulations.
“If a private company takes over, fixes the issues, and charges people for better services, fans would prefer that,” he added.
The Black Stars, however, are set to face Sudan at a yet-to-be-determined venue next month before heading to play at Sudan’s Al-Merrikh Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dodzie Numekevor, has been dismissed by President Akufo-Addo over the poor management of the country’s stadiums.
Currently, Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Stadium, and Cape Coast Stadium are all closed for maintenance.
