Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed disappointment with the recent performances of the Black Stars following their early struggles in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
His remarks come after the national team failed to secure a win in their first two qualifying matches.
Ghana lost 1-0 to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium in their Group F opener, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger in Berkane.
These results place the Black Stars in 3rd position in their group with only one point from two games.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe criticized the team for focusing more on personal achievements than on collective success, suggesting that the players lacked the grit and determination necessary to win.
“When they are playing, everybody is trying to play a master game, just joking with the ball. How can one person try to dribble about four or five players? Impossible,” he stated, criticising the team’s over-exuberant style of play.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe urged a shift towards developing local talent, noting that many players in Niger’s squad were home-based.
He emphasized the importance of investing in home grown players and encouraged coaches to demonstrate their expertise by nurturing local talents to compete alongside foreign-based stars.
“What they need is to look inward now. If they are real coaches, they should be able to train our local boys because our counterparts play with local boys in their countries and just mix them with one or two foreign players,” the Hearts of Oak Board Member added.
The Black Stars will look to turn their fortunes around when they face Sudan, led by former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah, in a crucial doubleheader on matchdays three and four of the qualifiers.
