Efua Ghartey, a highly experienced lawyer, was chosen by her peers to lead the association, marking a historic first for women in the GBA’s leadership.

Her election has been widely celebrated, with many acknowledging her role in breaking barriers in what has traditionally been a male-dominated profession.

In a congratulatory message shared on social media, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in Ghartey’s leadership abilities and her capacity to guide the GBA to new heights. He noted that her victory is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, reinforcing the nation’s progress toward gender equality.

“A hearty congratulations to Mrs. Efua Ghartey and Mrs. Victoria Osei-Bonsu Barth on their remarkable victories in this year’s Ghana Bar Association elections! Mrs. Ghartey’s determination and perseverance have finally been rewarded as she becomes the first female National President of the Bar Council after three attempts.”
