Dreams FC coach, Karim Zito has backed the decision of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) to revoke its approval of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for Ghana’s upcoming home match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which was used for Ghana’s opening game of the AFCON qualifiers against Angola, has been criticized as an “unsuitable playing field.”
CAF’s decision means the Black Stars may need to play their next fixture against Sudan at a neutral venue.
“Let me say this, I’m oK with that, with this decision by CAF. Yes, because this will help us to do it, to do things better. Because it’s like, today we go to Baba Yara, we play there, next time, there is trouble.”
He recalled his experience at the African Confederation event in Rwanda, noting the stark contrast in facilities.
“During the African Confederation, when I went to Rwanda, I looked at the facility and said we are far back. Far, far, far, far back. Even the dressing room of the coaches alone tells you something,” he added.
In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association to seek CAF’s approval for the Accra and University of Ghana Sports Stadiums as alternative venues for the Black Stars’ next home game.
The return leg against Sudan, managed by Kwesi Appiah, will take place at the Al-Merrikh Stadium. Ghana is set to play Sudan on October 11 and 15.
