The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that a sum of GHC80 million, approved for housing projects for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, cannot be accounted for.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, he stated that, to date, no Member of Parliament has any knowledge of the whereabouts of the GHC 80 million, which was released by the government for the provision of relief items to the affected residents.
Despite several inquiries in Parliament, including questions directed at the Ministers in charge, he said he has been unable to get any details regarding the funds.
He also emphasized that, none of the affected victims have received any benefits from the allocation.
“In fact, the whereabouts of the GHC 80 million the president claimed was approved for the relief of the affected people remains a mystery. I’ve asked the current minister, but he had no details. Even the former energy minister, now the NPP’s running mate, couldn’t provide information on the funds,” Mr Ablakwa noted.
“If you ask any MP, none can tell you where the money is, and the people who were supposed to benefit from it haven’t received anything,” he added.
Mr Ablakwa also highlighted the plight of 1,360 people who were displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage, revealing that they are still living in tents a year after the disaster.
He described the situation as a “national disgrace.”
“One year on, 1,360 people are still living under tents. It’s disgraceful that after such a major disaster, the government has not been able to provide proper housing for the victims. What is stopping the government?” he lamented.
