The Ghana Mine Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress has strongly criticized the passage of the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation 2022 (L.I 2462), labelling it as one of the most regressive pieces of legislation ever passed by Ghana’s Parliament.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the union’s General Secretary, Abdul Moomin Gbana, called for the immediate revocation of L.I 2462.
He emphasized the need for the creation of specialized courts to bolster the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
“We consider this to be one of the most regressive decisions Parliament has ever made, allowing mining in our forest reserves despite the environmental consequences. We demand the immediate repeal of L.I 2462 and the establishment of specialized courts to ensure swift prosecution in this fight,” Mr Gbana said.
He further cautioned that if these demands are not addressed by the end of September, Organized Labour will take necessary actions.
“If nothing is done, we will embark on a series of demonstrations and possibly a nationwide strike. If we remain passive, the situation will worsen within a year or two. It’s crucial that action is taken now,” Mr Gbana warned.
