The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has slammed National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama for urging his party’s supporters to protest at all district offices of the Electoral Commission (EC) on September 17, 2024.
Mahama’s call for a protest follows concerns from the NDC over alleged discrepancies in the voter register, which they claim could jeopardize the integrity of the 2024 general elections.
The announcement was made during a press briefing after Mahama filed his nomination for the presidential race.
Addressing supporters in Sampa, Jaman North District of the Bono Region, Mahama emphasized the need for accountability and transparency from the EC.
“If we desire free, fair, and peaceful elections, then the EC must up their game and do things right. On the 17th of this month [September], the NDC will demonstrate in every town with an EC office. Our chairman [Johnson Asiedu Nketiah] has announced it,” Mahama declared.
In response, Nana B condemned Mahama’s remarks in an interview with Joy FM, stating that the call for a protest is “reckless and unnecessary.”
He argued, “The former President is gaining notoriety for making comments that aim to create chaos. This protest is unwarranted because the process involves reviewing the voter register and reporting any irregularities to the EC, which is legally obligated to address them.”
Nana B added, “It is unfortunate and reckless for a former president to suggest that the EC is planning to rig the election for the NPP. The EC is constitutionally mandated to handle such issues appropriately.”
