Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, has highlighted the critical shortage of funds for dialysis sessions, despite patients making payments.
He disclosed that, the hospital currently subsidizes over GH¢300 per session.
In an interview with Accra-based, Citi News, Dr Ampomah urged renal patients to consider the significant subsidies provided and to refrain from complaining about the fees they pay for dialysis.
“We proposed to Parliament an increase in dialysis fees, estimating that to break even, we would need to charge around GH¢800 per session. Initially, we suggested GH¢760, but due to exchange rate fluctuations, it now stands at about GH¢800.
“However, Parliament approved a fee of GH¢491 for Korle Bu, which means we are under-recovering by more than GH¢300 for each dialysis session.
“Previously, from 2017 until last year, patients were not paying anything at all. So, this period where they have to contribute to their dialysis treatment is something they are not accustomed to, and their complaints are unjustified.”
