Mobile money vendors in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region have indefinitely suspended their services in response to a spate of violent robberies targeting their members.
The Mobile Money Vendors Association announced this decision to ensure the safety of its members, following 12 armed robbery incidents in the past three months, with eight specifically targeting mobile money operators.
In August 2024 alone, four mobile money shops were looted, resulting in significant financial losses and two fatalities.
Despite the arrest of four suspects, their release on bail has heightened concerns about safety and the effectiveness of the legal response.
Association Chairman, Tahiru Issahaku emphasized that halting services is crucial to protect members.
Channel One News confirmed that, mobile money operators are following the directive, with shops closed in Tumu and surrounding areas.
The strike has left many customers stranded and has sparked calls for immediate action to address the security issues.
The Sissala East Municipal Police Command declined to comment on the situation.
But there are increasing calls for improved security to allow residents continue their businesses in this vital agricultural region.
