The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has revealed the government’s plan to lift the recently imposed ban on grain exports by November.
This follows the abrupt implementation of the export ban due to unexpected grain production shortfalls in Northern Ghana, caused by a prolonged dry spell.
These shortfalls have negatively impacted crop production, sparking concerns about food security and potential inflationary pressures on grain prices.
The government’s decision to impose the ban was intended to protect the nation’s food supply, ensuring that domestic needs were prioritized before any grain could be exported.
In a recent interaction with journalists, Dr Acheampong expressed confidence that the current challenges would be resolved by November, allowing the government to lift the export restrictions.
He emphasized that, the government is closely monitoring weather patterns and agricultural outputs in the affected regions.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, and we are optimistic that by November, we will have a clearer picture. Once the northern harvest comes in, along with the southern sector’s yield and imports, we expect to lift the restrictions. We will continue to keep the nation informed as the situation evolves,” Dr. Acheampong stated.
